Émancipée, elle ne veut pas suivre le chemin tout tracé de la femme mexicaine du début du siècle. Elle veut étudier, elle veut voyager, elle veut la liberté et le plaisir ! Elle lutte aussi pour la défense des plus démunis et pour la reconnaissance des anciennes cultures mexicaines.
Après une maladie d’enfance et un terrible accident, elle met en scène son corps et sa souffrance dans ses tableaux : son style de peinture, les thèmes qu’elle aborde dans ses toiles la mèneront à la célébrité.
